Prevailing Wages

In the state of California, employers with federal contracts are required to pay their employees prevailing wages. Prevailing wages are set pay rates and fringe benefits for employees of employers who are working on government jobs as contractors. The U.S. Secretary of Labor sets the prevailing wage rates and benefits based upon the typical wages/benefits in the area. By enforcing prevailing wages, employees can be assured that they will receive fair, mandated wages that are in compliance with the law when they are working for an employer on a federal contract.

The Walsh Healy Act, Service Contract Act and Davis-Bacon Act are federal laws which cover the enforcement of prevailing wages. State laws may also regulates prevailing wages, which must be paid by employers with government contracts.
